Open letters to Dan from his fans continued...

I couldn't agree more with what Mark D. said about an amazing duo album being Dan & Kenny Loggins together. It was so great to read that. It would be the ULTIMATE musical fantasy to me. Only one mistake Mark made...rather than "between the two of you, some of the best music in the last 20-30 yrs..."it should have read, "between the two of you, THE best music in the last 20-30 yrs!" Alison

Dear Mr. Fogelberg,

I have enjoyed your music for quite some time now. I too write poetry and have written a couple of songs. I am just not having any luck getting my material to the right people. I live in Denver Colorado, and I know that you too live here in our great State of Colorado. I guess that is one of the reasons that I am writing to you. I'm not even sure that this email will get to you, but I have to give it a chance.

Not only have I written some songs, but I also have a number of songs that were written by my mother back in the late 50's and early 60's, that I feel could be turned into hits, if the right person recorded them. Her songs were recorded in Nashville studios and I now possess the demo tapes. I would just like to have someone with some talent listen to them. I read in your bio that you had a young lady, I apologize I didn't write down her name, that you have taken under your wing. It may be that the songs that I have here could become a hit for her. I know that you are an extremely busy individiual, but I would ask if you had a bit of spare time, if you could listen to what I have. I would enjoy meeting with you and getting some of your advice.

If you would like to contact me, I can be reached through the internet at POETJT@WORLDNET.ATT.NET, or you could reach me at home

Dan,

I am not, (cannot) be sure you'll ever see this, but just in case, I couldn't pass the opportunity to pass something along.

I recently picked up a book entitled "Conversations With God." A most interesting and profound read. It's message parallels your music, at least for me. For many of my close friends, I have bought them a copy of the book. Since I have no idea how I would get one to you, I didn't bother trying to send one to your Fan Clubs or to the postmaster in Boulder. But when you have a minute, pick up the book, and if you don't it find it insightful and making you re-visit a few conversations of your own, well at least you had another perspective. However, if you are the person whom I believe you to be, you'll know exactly what I mean.

Also, thanks for many years of beautiful music and lyrics. I have been a fan for over 20 years, and I recon I'll be one till my time here is up. Thanks again.

Dear Dan,
I was only two years old when "Homefree" was released. Now at 27 I have all but two of your C.D.'s. I love every one of them. "Homefree", is still my favorite. My wife and I were able to see you at Wolf Mountain a couple of years ago. She knows that I am your biggest fan. We can't go into a music store without browsing the Fogelberg section. It is kind of a religious ritual, and always will. I have been looking for the song book "Dan Fogelberg- Complete songs Vol#2" Is it available yet, and if so where can I get a copy. Thank you for all the songs, that although were not written about me, somehow seem they were. Please keep sharing your talents with us through the years to come. We love your music.

Hello Mr. Fogelberg,
I listen to a variety of music and have found two artists that have similar sounds...you and an artist named Michael Card. I am curious to know if you have ever met him or listened to his music. Your music has the rare quality of growing better as one listens more. I sincerely appreciate your honesty and talent in your writing. It is a joy to listen to the music that you create. Thanks for your time.
Sincerely,
Clark Wheeler

Dan, I have been wanting to write this letter for sometime now. I want you to know how much your music has been a part of my life. I am pretty new at the whole comp. thing. I was so thrilled to see this page, and be able to read about other people whos life you have also touched. I have been a fan since your first solo album in 1972. I was in third grade then. My Dad had a bunch of College students working for him. I would hear your music. I have loved it ever since.

I saw you at Red Rocks this summer. It was one of your finest performances. And they are all great. I have seen you 10 times now!! Even when you did your brief Frankie and the Aliens thing. I also met you one time on the airplane. Im sure you dont remember me. But you were kind to me even though you were very tired from traveling. Thank you. To The Morning has always been my favorite song for as long as I can remember. My sister and I still laugh at the fact that we were glad that CDs came out, or my album would have worn through.

Anyway, thank you for sharing your gift with us for so many years. You truly are the best!

Heather

I was wondering what inspired you to write "Tucson, Arizona(Gazette)". It remains my favorite song of yours. "The Reach" is a close second. I would appreciate a short reply if you have a free minute.

Thanks in advance! Joel

Hi Dan,
I want to thank you for your music over the years. I really like the concert you gave in 1995. I hope that you liked the DreamCatcher I gave you and for taking the time to meet some of your fans. I hope to meet you again when you come to town to play again.

Hi Dan,
I met you (I don't even remember how many years ago) up at Lake Tahoe. Don't know if you would remember, but Wyland was there and A. S. Anyway, I loved the conversation and always wish you the best...
Been to a lowampi yet?
With thought,
Denise

Dear Dan,
I was so sorry you did not add Philadelphia to your tour dates!! I have seen you in the past at the Valley Forge Music Fair where you commented that you felt you were in a microwave on the rotating stage. Now they have torn it down to put up a shopping center. (Sounds like a song) My husband and I played "Longer Than" as our wedding theme, and have recently happily celebrated our 10th anniversary. I have enjoyed your music for almost 20 years now and it has always lifted me up and made me appreciate how wonderful life and music are. Thanks!!!
Your friend, Ruth

Hi Dan,
I still can't believe I'm doing this. I have often read the letters of others and wished I was bold enough to express my thoughts to you. Well today starts a new decade in my life, it is my 40th birthday and I am bold! I decided to thank those who have made a significant difference in my life. The first one I thought of was you. I have listened to your music and learned about your life for many years. You have shared so much, not only your musical genius, but also your heart. I can't think of anything that has calmed me, provoked me to action, inspired me or comforted me more than your words and music. I have seen you five times in concert, most recently, in July, in Park City, Utah. You were fabulous. Your piano playing brought tears to my eyes. Your voice was so clear and strong in the beautiful Rocky mountains. I wish all Fogelberg fans could be in that setting and see you perform. You thanked the audience for all of their support over the years, which was very touching to me. Now it is my turn to thank you. Words escape me because a mere thank you seems so insignificant. Please know that you have touched my life and I am forever grateful to you. You will live on in the hearts of many forever. My secret dream is to someday meet you in person, look into your eyes, and touch your soul as you have touched so many others. I wish you happiness now and forever.
Mary Ann

Dear Dan,

Thank you for all that you have done to help others. You have inspired me to also try to help others.

I have always wanted to try to help others through music. I have been involved with providing music benefits for our community and I have some ideas that I want to share with you. My hope is to develop a music product to be sold nationwide to benefit the not for profit area of Public Action To Deliver Shelter, Nature Conservancy and Children Learning Museums. I have written songs and recorded other music for this purpose of trying to help others. Enclosed are tapes of live songs that I have recorded on DAT with Silver Buchanan (a blind saxaphonist) and Mike Potter on violin. I too also believe that a recorded live performance is also the best approach of true music representation. I am also in the process of preparing this music on CD for the sole purpose of raising money for organizations in need.

The tapes are labeled as Project tapes that I have also made available in our own community to help to raise money and awareness for these not for profit organizations. The tapes also include a radio interview that I did that really explains what Back Porch is.

Project: Public Action To Deliver Shelter
Project: Nature Conservancy
Project: Teach The Childre

I believe that the people of this country are all ready to answer this call. Together, we can all accomplish great things - together as an entire country, we might even make history. I believe that the time is right and the time is now. After leading a petition drive in our community to stop an airport expansion, I realize that we can all do alot - if a whole community/country pulls together.

I respect the work that you have done and would greatly seek any advice that you may have on how to procede with this music benefit project.

Sincerely,
Jeff Smith

DEAR DAN,
THANKS FOR THE MUSIC. I HAVE ALWAYS THOUGHT YOU SHOULD PERFORM YOUR SONGS WITH AN ORCHESTRA AND OF COURSE, WITH YOUR ON ARRANGEMENTS. NOW I HEAR YOU MIGHT DO JUST THAT WITH THE DENVER ORCHESTRA. PLEASE SAY IT'S TRUE AND PLEASE SAY YOU MIGHT DO A TOUR DOING THE SAME IDEA WITH THE ORCHESTRAS OF DIFFERENT CITIES. NOW THAT WOULD BE HEAVEN ON EARTH.
THANKS AGAIN,
FOGEL1023

dan thanks for phoenix and twin sons still sing all those songs to this day. I'm one of those buyers you won't hear much from in the too distant future. You know the one's that have the record and cd? your one of three of my favorite that i have on both and i have 300 cd's and 175 records.

Dear Dan,
17 years ago I became pregnant with my first son Alexander. Through those months each night as I rocked and contemplated becoming a mother, I listened to the Netherlands. I shared your journey as I was beginning my own. After my son was born, I continued my nightly vigil in the rocker as I nursed him. As a toddler, it was the only thing that would calm him and became his "Nite Nite" song. My son is now 17 and we are looking for colleges. He has grown so far away from me and yet still when he can't sleep he will ask me where the "Nite Nite" song is. Of course now we have gone through numberous album copies, cassette copies and now CD. Thank you for providing the gateway to my son's childhood memories.

Sheree

Dear Dan,
My name is Patti DeFrancesco and I am a big FAN of your's. I have been a fan since the 1970's. In 1991 I saw you for the first time at Lake Compounce in Southington, CT. I recently saw you perform at the Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford, CT. It was such a personal show--just YOU, your Guitar, and the Audience. You were just fantastic. I was in the 2nd row and YOU made me feel as though you were doing the concert just for ME. Thank you for being such a great artist--But thank you mostly for being just YOU.
Patti

Mr Fogelberg,
I don't know if you'll even see this, but I wanted to tell you how much your music has meant to me. I am an 18 year old guitarist who found your music through my uncle. One day, he sang "Leader of the Band" for me and I was hooked. I'm sorry to say that as of yet, I only have the greatest hits CD, but there is one song on it that really means a lot to me, "Run for the Roses". I know you get this a lot, but when I hear that song, I think of a good friend I came to love dearly-- she loves horses and she is making her "Run for the Roses" far away from me. She was the first girl I ever cared for and means a great deal to me. I just wanted to thank you for giving me something to remeber her by for the rest of my life. Keep up the great work. If you're ever in Garner, N.C. (right outside of Raleigh, N.C.), look me up-- my dad makes great fried chicken! :~)
Your fan now and ever,
John

Hello Dan,
Duo albums have worked well for you. Have you thought about duo work with other contemporaries. One particular artist that keeps coming to mind would be Kenny Loggins, between the two of you some of the best pop music in the last 20 to 30 years has been created. That would be interesting.

Take care and keep up the good work my friend.

Mark D.

After seeing some of the greatest bands of the seventies during my college days (the Eagles, Elton John, America, Heart, Bruce Springsteen, you name 'em), I thought I had experienced the ultimate in live performances. That was until my wife and I caught a solo performance by Dan Fogelberg at the Grand Old Opry House in Nashville in 1979 or 1980. Just Dan, his guitar, and a grand piano! Throw in the second row seats and what can I say! We're still reminiscing about that one to this day. Dan Fogelberg's music touches a chord in one's soul like few other performers.

Mike Stroud, Murfreesboro, Tennessee

Hi Dan, I wanted to thank you for all the beautiful music through the years. Your songs have touched my soul and your graceful spirit remains a treasured part of my heart. You have traveled through my life as a hauntingly eloquent minstrel, at times mirrowing my own life. You are a truely gifted man.
Wysteria72

OK, it sounds like Dan didn't approach anyone in the audience at his other concerts, so I'll tell my story.

Meadowbrook Hall is a very intimate, outdoor concert arena. The front row had individual chairs smashed as close to the edge of the stage as possible. Since we had front row seats, we were probably only 5 feet away from Dan when he was playing the guitar. (In fact, the pictures on the main Dan web page is about as close as we were in person.)

Anyway, since I was born and raised in Boulder, I have been a Dan fan since he started hanging out around that area - but that's an entire other story.

The front row was split by an aisle, with a group of "low key" people on one side, and 6 enthusiastic fans on our side (myself and my husband included). We had a great time, made a great deal of noise, and I'm sure Dan couldn't miss hearing us. Plus, 3 of the 6 of us were women that (how can I say this without sounding arrogant...), well, we all were suprisingly not hard on the eyes. (We were strangers before the concert!)

When the concert started, it was still daylight, so I'm also sure he could SEE us for at least and hour of his concert (by the way, he played for 2-1/2 hours for us!)

I had a rose I was going to give to him if I could. I waited until he played "Run for the Roses" before I tried. But, he ignored me. The girl sitting next to me (that I had just met at the concert) thought that was horrible of him, so she took the head of her rose that she hadn't planned on giving to him, and, to my horror, heaved it at him. Fortunately, it went flying over his head, and I don't think he even saw it. But, at that point, I sat down lower in my seat...

When Dan finished the concert, he came over to our "wild" side and shook hand with the 6 of us - well, make that 5. When I saw him headed our way, I bent down to find my rose to finally give to him. So, my big chance to say "hi" to Dan, and my rear is in the air... I was so bummed, I thought I might cry.

Fortunately, he came out for an encore. At that point, I was sure he wasn't going to approach us again. But, when he finished, he put down his guitar and (at least in my eyes) walked directly over to me. So I grabbed his right hand, and smashed a bunch of rose petals in his hand (that was all that was left of the poor rose), then profoundly said, "Here's your damned rose". Dan laughed and said, "Thank you", so I hope I didn't scare him. What an idiot - my chance to say something meaningful (like, great concert, wonderful guitar playing, etc), and all I think of to say is that...

At this point, I'm really at the end of my story. But, the one thing I remember most about smashing the rose petals in Dan's hand, is looking down and seeing my father's wedding ring that I wear on my middle finger of my right hand. My Dad died last year after a long battle with prostate cancer and MS. Fortunately, we have enough money that we were able to hire a private lear jet and fly him from Boulder to Toledo (where I now live) so he could stay at a beautiful, new in-patient hospice. He lasted 7 weeks at the hospice, and I spent a lot of time listening to Dan's music at night to find some comfort during that sad time.

So, if you want to find something spiritual about my story, I will always remember seeing my Dad's ring and wondering if he had anything to do with it! (Wish he would have made me say something more profound, but I guess you can't have everything.)

So, thanks Dan (and Dad) for making such a great memory.

Janet

Hi Dan, I just returned from roamin' in Wyoming and Colorado with my friend Jaime in "OL 77". What a trip. I wish you would play Ohio sometime.
Karl

Hi Dan,

Just a quickie, Thanks for all of the beautiful music you have given to us, Please, please, come to the UK, There must be an army of us desperate to see you live!!!

Belated Happy Birthday

Cheers James and Sophie

Dan,
I hope you enjoyed your birthday. Please think about releasing a live version of this tour. It was great. Hopefully, I'll see you in Maine next year.

Dan: I just wanted to let you know that I have been sending E-mail messages to all of Pittsburgh's local radio stations requesting air play for some of your new material on your latest CD. I hope that other fans that are able to E-mail, will follow suit. Come on DANFANS....Let's get some airplay..... Denise in Pittsburgh

Dan,

So sorry I am late with my Birthday Wishes for you; but, my little girl and I baked a birth cake for you on the 13th, I let Mary decorate it, we even sang "Happy Birthday" to you and Mary blew out the candles. My husband, well he kept insisting he was going to call 911 and have me taken away. He even told my little Mary that "this is very sick". Can you imagine! He did eat the cake though! Hope it was a great one Dan!!

Melissa

Dan,

I became a fan in 1972(?) after your tour with Michael Murphy. The soul that is revealed in your songs has touched me many times and paralelled my life in so many ways. You are truly a gift to us and Mother Earth. Thank you for the music! Thank you for your Spirit!

Steve

Happy Birthday, Dan!
Gina in La.

Dear Dan,

I had the opportunity to see your show in Portland last week and it was awesome!!! I've been a big fan of yours since my teen years and because you write from the heart so much of the time, seeing you on stage was like coming face to face with an old friend. It is also wonderful that you have been true to your self all these years. What an adventure!

I can't tell you how songs like Phoenix and lots of cuts on Home Free, High Country Snows and lots of others have been a part of my life. Much like you, I have followed my own path, my passion being radio, so in addition to just loving your music, I've had the opportunity to play your music a lot, (you have had some heavy rotation on stations I've worked at!), so hearing your music also brings memories of great times on the air.

It is so true about continuing to grow and not sell out creatively. I have worked for some big stations and a couple of years ago was signed by the folks at William Morris for some interactive radio and television programming I developed, but the setting was way too commercial for me. I also have a small ranch, in God's country, (which is Oregon in case your'e wondering), with 2 horses, 2 cats and 2 dogs. My latest projects are an interactive sit-com I created that is in the process of a pilot, I am buying a radio station in Portland, OR, (that way I can do 24 hour Fogelberg, LOL :) ), and I am getting my Masters Degree in Liberal Arts at Reed College. What my experience has consistently been is that if I am true to myself, some higher force just opens the right doors. And I've learned that fame or the other trappings of success are not what the journey is about.

Good luck on future albums. I hope you find your true love some day...

Peace,

JJ

Happy Birthday Dan !!!!
PJane66@aol.com

Happy Birthday Dan, from your fans in Lebanon Mo. We will enjoy your birthday by listening to your new boxed 4 set CD. Your gift to my wife and I. Thanks Bill

Hey Dan, Happy Birthday. I hope singing for your fans and friends does for you what it does for us. When I'm down, you make me happy, when I'm happy, you make me happier. There is no other artist who gets to "my heart & soul" as you and your music do. As much as you deserve a break, I hope you never take one. Debbie - New Jersey

Happy 46th Birthday Dan for on August 13, 1997.

I have been to couple of his concert. One was on February 16, 1992 down in Seattle for the Solo accoustic tour and other was in Telluride, Colorado for Telluride Blues Grass Festival on Sunday, June 20, 1993 (Day before Summer Soltice Day). He had a great voice along with being tall, dark, handsome, pretty blue eyes and his smile. I love his lyrics for love songs, nature, sailing, skiing "Beyond the Edge", and others. It is all in my warm heart. I have a couple of his old LP albums sitting on my dresser across from my bed and "Dream." One of his LP albums is opened up like a book, An Innocent age (Ghost picture of him) and ther other LP ablum is on the back of Captured Angel (Good Picture of him). Dan, I hope you get a chance to read this. You have a great birthday. I wish I could be down with you for it. Does that mean you re going to buy me a house? Just Kidding. Ha Ha Ha!!!

Love, your Dan FanLisa Ann Simpson from Juneau, Alaska.

Hi Dan, Happy Happy Birthday !!! My wish for you is to find peace, harmony and much happiness in your life. You have given so much pleasure and enjoyment to so many others,so it shall all return to you. Your mother must be very proud of you. Being a mother, this is the most important thing I want out of my life; is to watch my children grow, and to be proud of each goal they reach. To know that my teachings were what steered them and made them the likable people they come to be.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the past 25 years of beautiful music.
I will love you always and forever!!! ~Kay

A dream is a wish your heart makes, when your fast asleep In dreams you will lose your heartache Whatever you wish for, you'll keep Have faith in your dream and someday Your rainbow will come smiling through, No matter how your heart is grieving,if you keep on believing The dream that you wish will come true! :)

Hi Dan!

I just want to tell you how great I think your music is. I recently found a tape of a song that may be yours. Unforntunately I'm not sure if you sang it or not. I think it's called "Hold Me". The chorus goes something like this:

"Hold me, tell me that you'll be here tomorrow. Hold me, do you have a love I could borrow?"

If anybody can tell me where I can find this song I would appreciate the help. I think it was out in the very early 80"s.

Thanks.

MelRobo

Dan,

I was one of those privileged to speak to you and shake your hand following the concert at Humphrey's in San Diego. I'm sure you don't remember, but I told you that your music had gotten me through a lot of difficult times in my life, including the death of my Father, and a divorce, as well as good times. In such a brief moment, and frantically trying to think of how to thank you for your music, I really didn't express myself well. I fell in love with your music in the early 70's and have never found anyone to compare or take your place. Music is such a huge part of my life, I can't imagine life without it. You don't just write music, you put yourself out there for fans to accept and love, or to reject. It's a pretty scary thing to do! But that's why you touch lives. That's why when my father had his first heart attack, and was in Italy visiting my sister at the time and I couldn't get to him, I just listened to your music over and over and over again. When he died four years later, Fogelberg music was my therapy. I have also taken many long drives where I started the trip with Home Free and played every Fogelberg tape in existence and sang the entire trip. (This works best when alone! Others tend to get tired of it!) There really isn't another person on Earth that I really wanted to meet. I just wish I could have told you at that moment, REALLY, what your music has meant to me, and how much I continue to enjoy it. It amazes me that you can continue to put out such beautiful music and that your voice has just improved through the years. It was such a wonderful experience to meet you - and thank God you were so gracious! I would have been so disappointed if you'd been impatient with us! I had also attended the concert at the Greek, which was wonderful. I live about 4 hours north of San Diego, so we were guests at Humphrey's for the concert. Thank you again - and I am so glad your injured finger healed! Please be careful when you sail away the rest of the summer. Happy birthday! :-)
Cheryl

Hi All,

Saw Dan at the Greek Theatre on Sunday, and it inspired me to find this site! Thanks Pete for all your hard work, you really are a dedicated fan, and I enjoyed all the info you have here for us.

I have loved Dan's music for a very, very long time. It is so wonderful to see someone like him that has stood the test of time, and has gotten better with age! I loved his concert, and have been listening to his CD's for about 5 days straight now...Love it! Years ago, I used to have a roommate in college who was completely NUTS over Dan and his music. I remember we went together to see Tim Weisburg in concert not long after TWIN SONS came out. I have always loved that album, and wore it out in those early days. Thank heavens for Cds! Since You've Asked, Same Auld Lang Syne, Lonely in Love, and Seeing you Again are my favorites. Looking forward to whatever comes next-- meanwhile, the Portrait collection is being played over and over...

I'm not much of a groupie, but maybe I'll run into him on a chair lift somewhere and get the chance to say "Hi, and Thanks"... All the Best,
Laurie

Hi everyone,

I did a back to back Dan deal, (Las Vegas and L.A.) What a great time!!! I have to admit to liking the Vegas show better than the LA show. Not for content, or better songs, for the pleasure and pain of seeing his music alter peoples actions. I scored the best seats I've ever had for a show in Vegas. (2nd row) I gave up my seat to a young couple so that she could have a better view of Dan because in front of her was a large man that she was going to have to strain to see over. She had drug her boyfriend in to see Dan that night. He was trying to put a good spin on things saying he'd heard some of the CD's and thought he was O.K.. From 20 seconds after he sat down and went into his first number this young guy was hooked. His mouth agape and clapping in disbelief at what he was witnessing. DAN you hooked another one!!!! Great job...I was battered by the girlfriend of this new found Dan Fan every time a song started...(does that mean I should send the bill to Dan for the dislocation of my shoulder from its socket??? LOL!!!) Dan put on great shows both evenings. For those of you that missed this unique artist I'm sorry and it's your loss, Dan was on top of the songlist, and really played awesome for someone that hurt his finger and almost lost it. I can't say thank you enough to Dan for all the inspiration and the effort he puts into his shows. IT SHOWS!!! Great time Dan, thanks for another life long memory, it's like 1000 to nothing.... how do I pay you back???

Rick.

What an incredible technology!!! Can't believe there is so much Fogelberg information through it.....and until the internet I searched magazine archives for Fogelberg information!!! Thanks, Pete, for letting us really, really serious fans know that we are not the only ones....it is so interesting to read others' comments..... I have always wondered if my obsession with his music was a little strange, since I have never had the same reaction to any other artist.....What is it about his music that does this to so many people????? He is a musical genius, I guess....and unique!
jo

Dear Dan (I hope it's O.K. to call you Dan):

I do hope you will get the opportunity to read this. For many years I had hoped to communicate with you on some level but never had a medium to do so. The internet never ceases to amaze me!

Your music (along with a few other acoustic musicians) was my inspiration in my younger years. Like you, as a child, I knew music was the love of my life. I just wasn't sure where I would fit in the music world but intended to follow this love in my heart. I studied classical guitar and piano in college and in the early 80's moved to Nashville, Tennessee on my own (what a great city!). I recall an evening when I saw you in a small bar near the Belle Meade area (the name of the bar fails me). Waylon Jennings' baby blue convertible was parked out front so I assumed you were with his band. I didn't want to approach you but hoped you might sing a song or two on the small stage.....but you didn't.

I soon discovered the music business was tough and even tougher for a woman. I met alot of talented people waiting for their "break". After two years, I lost track of what was important to me. I lost the courage to follow my heart. I decided to go back home to South Florida and took a different road and entered the business world (which is quite dull most of the time and uneventful!). No creativity in this business. And here I sit with a restless heart.

My one regret is that I gave up on something I loved so much. I so admire your courage and perseverance to pursue your dream. Maybe someday our paths with cross again. Thanks for your time and God bless (my e-mail address is klozito@aol.com).

KIMBERLEY

Dear Dan Fogelberg,

I want to thank you for all the work that you have done for music over the years. I have been trying to do good things with music to help others. I have formed the Back Porch Music Benefit Foundation and we raise money for organizations to help people in our community. I have taught a very special blind sax player alot of my music and she inspires me so much everytime she plays.

The music that I have written comes from the heart and I thank you and Crosby, Stills and Nash for showing me the gift of music and the power that it has to help others. I will always try to continue to keep this style of music and this approach to music alive and well.

Thank you so much. Together we can all make a difference to help others.

Sincerely,
Jeff Smith

I would like to send you a tape/video of our live shows recorded on DAT. If you would be interested, please let me know where I can send them to you.

I was also able to give the music to David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Joe Vitale at the CSN Show at the Rosement Theater in Rosemont, Il. and to James Taylor at the Taste of Chicago. Here are some songs that I have written that we play at our community benefits.

Raise Up your Voices.. - J. Smith (c) 1995 Back Porch Music
VERSE: EaddD/AaddB/Asusp
BRIDGE: Bm/A/E/

"This song is dedicated to all the local musicians that attempt to have some thing good to say with their music - inspired by Crosby, Stills and Nash". JS 7/01/95

Raise up your voices and let them be heard once again
You sing out your songs now
sing them out loud and strong
You said we could change the world...
and I still believe it can be done.
So raise up your voices ....Raise them up now....

Cause nothing is gonna change in this world
Unless we change some things now
Nothing will change in our world
unless we change some things now

(break) - harmonica

Cause nothing is gonna change in this world
Unless we change some things now
Nothing will change in our world
unless we change some things now

So Raise up your voices and let them be heard once again
You sing out your songs now
sing them out loud and strong
You said we could change the world...
and I still believe it can be done.
So raise up your voices ... Raise them up now....
Please raise up your voices and let them be heard once again

Take Time to Love - J. Smith (c) 1996 Back Porch Music
VERSE: F#addA/E
BRIDGE: Bm/F#m/E

"The world that we live in has many problems - but the power of love can overcome". JS 2/19/96

When the world seems wrong
and there is no love in sight that you see
Just trust in your self and all that you can be
And take time to love.... Make time for love

We can be a generation that can finally see
and break down these racial walls
between you and me
We might even make History
Please take time to love... Make time for love

(break)

When the songs have all been said and done
What will we leave you and me
But lets give the children the chance to still see love
And take time for love... Make Time for love

Take Time... and make time
Take time for love...
Take time and make time ... for love...

We can help that mother and child get through

We can take time off work for our family
Oh yes we can
We can spend more time with our children
Oh yes we can
When it comes down, change a life if you can somehow

We can bring more food to the food lines
Oh yes we can
We can send the messge to capitol town
Oh yes we can
We can turn this town around
Oh yes we can
Oh yes we can.....

"Written with many jobless welfare people in mind - I hope help is on the way before our cities fall apart before our eyes" 04/97

I see a man & see he's tried so hard
But times got bad - he lost his job
What will he do now, Where will he turn

Please stand strong, Help is on the way

Sometimes she works a 12 hour day&127
Kids at the day care - I hope they're ok'
It ain't easy to make it through
But it will be ok, what can you say

What will we do when the welfare lines go away

Can we take a long look back now.
America where have you been
And where are you now
We've got to stop now to listen and learn
Politicians listen and learn

What will you do when the welfare lines go away please stand strong, Help is on the way

Dear Dan,
Just thought that I would drop you a note to say "thanks" like so many others before me. I was at my brother's house in Indy recently and he was showing me his new CD purchases. He brought out an new box set and put it on the stereo and the track that he played brought back such memories. It was "Netherlands". I could remember lying on the floor in the late '70s with my head between the stereo speakers playing this song over and over. The music and words spoke to my very soul. As the orchestra would swell, it felt as if my heart were going to burst. God, I had forgetten what that song does to me! That was two weeks ago, and I haven't been able to get it out of my mind since hearing it again. After I got home, I surfed the net to see if I could locate any info on you and I found Pete's excellent site. Upon checking your concert schedule, I was disappointed to see that I had missed your concert in Indy.
I will be vacationing in the Colorado Springs area the last 2 weeks in October. I was wondering if you will be playing anywhere in the area during that time? I would love to come and hear you play in person! Again, thank you and the Creator for a gift that can touch hearts and souls.

As an Educator I love Dan's music..I started listening when I was in high school and it has been a wonderful time for me to listen to Dan's songs....I love the way he spins history and advanced thought into feelings beyond the words....But I guess that is why we all listen isn't it.....I do have a question though and I think I have part of the answer....So, here it is,,,,,,Would you, Dan consider yourself a Bard in a druid sense?.....I wonder because a lot of the music base seems very Celtic to me....As a matter of fact when I ask students to name an artist that has Celtic origins...None can but when they compare Celtic music to yours they are very much curious as am I....By the way, I don't teach music i teach the other measure....Mathematics.....
............Thank you Dan for sharing your private world with us and I hope you continue....By the way O'Keefe is my favorite too.....and of course sense the public aways feels that we are best friends with the stars that touch us...Thank you for inspiring me to write...I am now published.....Though I have to say Your songs are to deep for me write too....But they do inspire when I can't write at all.....Thanks again...... I just returned from a weekend in Las Vegas and saw Dan on Saturday night at the Hard Rock's Joint. I must say, not the best venue I've ever seen him at, but one of the best performances in it's ability to touch the fans. I first saw Dan in the summer of 1978 (dating myself), and the first album I ever owned was Home Free. I was 13 years old. I have seen him 5 or 6 times and would have loved to have seen him again at the Greek on Sunday the 3rd, but couldn't get a plane back to Los Angeles early enough in the day.
Dan was barefoot at the Hard Rock show, and I just wanted him to know that, perhaps in some warped sense of sympathy, I came home on Sunday night and promptly broke my toe, too. It was breaking my toe that led me to sit in the chair and decide to look for a site devoted to him on the Internet. I was pleased to find this one. I am grateful to have the opportunity to add my admiration for his talent over the years. He has added a great deal of pleasure to my life since that Home Free album I bought 24 years ago. As my own marriage crumbles around me, his music on Saturday night somehow brought me strength. At times, it even brought tears to my eyes in public. I was sorry to hear he is going through tough times as well. Best of everything to Dan and his family and friends. May your music live forever. Somehow, I have been inspired to return to my own quest for creativity. Thanks.
Deb

In the midst of some of my most cherished memories are Dan's songs. Ex: Singing my old girlfriend to sleep with "Same Auld Lang Syne." Relaxing by reading lyrics that my good friend Kelsey (who I see has already sent a message to this site), so graciously wrote out for me. I don't have too extensive of a Fogelberg audio collection.

Anyway, his songs have embedded themselves into my life with their heart-felt honesty, tenderness, and that "warm and fuzzy" feeling I get when I hear or think of one of his songs. Thank God for Dan Fogelberg!

To make a long story short... I, in all sincerity, love his work.

Thank you Dan, for everthing.
Love,
Nico

Dear Dan,

Your music touches my heart. Your lyrics touch my soul. Thanks for sharing yours with us. Each of your songs is a unique creation that speaks to the listener. I love the vulnerability and honesty that I feel with your music.

I'm just glad that I have had you around. . .at least your CD's and in concert. . .and am looking forward to more.

Terry

Dear Dan,

I will be attending your concert at the Greek tomorrow night, Aug. 3. My brother and his wife saw you in Sante Fe last week (they live in near Albuquerque). He's already called me twice to tell me what a wonderful evening they had. I must admit, however, I'm sending this email only to fulfill a promise I made to him.

Actually, I'm glad he called. I didn't know you were performing. All week I've played those ol' LPs. The last CD I purchased was "Wild Places" until this week when I bought "Portrait".

It's been a wonderful trip ... reminiscing. Like many of your fans have stated, I feel a certain synergy with your music and your life. Born in Peoria, I moved to LA in 1985. My parents still live in Peoria. I lived near your folks on McClure (at least that's where I was told they lived.) My brother went to Woodruff. I even beleive my ex, a long-time musician, met you once at some club in Morton.

LA was supposed to be a stop-over. Instead, I'm turning 40 this year, still in LA, and find my priorities have changed. Although sometimes I wish I had stopped to pursue personal goals sooner, I am slowly taking steps to achieve them. (Ultimately, I'll buy land in Colorado or similar locale and raise horses.)

Listening to your music this week rekindled that mental catharsis ... that return to myself. It was a much needed burst of positive motivation. After all, your music is part of my past, my roots. I'm glad I re-discovered you, again.

James Christensen, the artist, once said: "The boat, the river, the voyage is life. And, the river is the path our life takes. And, we don't know the destination always because we don't really know what's around the next bend all the time. I think the anticipation, the mystery is part of what make's life exciting and enjoyable." We've traveled the Illinois to different destinations. May your journey be filled with happiness and continued success.

Thank you,

Becky

P.S. You may be interested to know that I observed an unusual phenomenon this week. I have three cats (Dacquiri, Cyrano, and Rembrandt). When I played your music, they all came from different areas of the house, sat down in the livingroom, and didn't leave until the music stopped. This is a first. I guess humans aren't the only creatures who enjoy Dan Fogelberg.

Dear Mr. Fogelberg

The concert at Wente Bros. in Livermore, CA was a wonderful evening. Your performance was everything I knew it would be. Having seen you several times in the past. We traveled down from the Sacramento area to attend. The venue was small and intimate. I've written snail mail to you four or five times over the past 20years with no response, so thought I'd give this a try. That night you were teasing the crowd about the Beatles, and being a huge Beatles fan myself I felt compelled to remind you that the Beatles made four films, not two. Hard Days Night, Help, Magical Mystery Tour, and Let it Be. Just wanted to remind you.
I truly appreciate your traveling and having the opportunity to hear you perform. I'd love to have a response someday.
Sincerely
Deanna Leveque

To those who may see (and hopefully Dan Fogelberg himself), Here I sit at my computer, a relative newcomer to this world of networking. One of the first things I did was head for Fogelberg Country. I cann't believe there are so many of us "DanFans" out there! It is refreshing, to say the least.
Dan, if you do happen to read this, like the countless others in this space, I want to thank you. Your music was first palyed for me when I was 21. Nethe rlands became my theme song the moment I heard it. And when I was finally married this past October, I walked down the aisle to my future husband as you sang this beautiful song. I always knew that I wanted to use it if and when the time came. It fit so perfectly! The church music director was a little surprised at my choice, but . . . My life (and my marriage) have not been conventional and every line in Netherlands just seems to highlight my feelings, goals and decisions. Thank you for being such an integral part of one of the most special moments in my life.
I only hope that one day I can actually hear you in person (I was unable to make it to a concert this summer). Your music is eternal and your spirit shines so brightly in it's melodies and words, your Gift is an Old one and you have used it wisely.
Christine

Thank you, Pete, for allowing us to do this, and thank you for the people who shared so openly their stories about Dan Fogelberg. And, Dan, if you ever get this, and I truly hope you do, then thank you for the memories and the music that came straight from the heart.

I've been a Dan Fan for as long as I can remember. I am now 18 years old, one of the younger fans, I guess, but he is truly my favorite singer. His music hits very close to home, and I wish with all my heart that I could go see him in concert. I don't really have much of a story to tell about his music. The first song I clearly ever remembered hearing was "Same Auld Lang Syne", and I heard that on the radio when I was very young. (I'm guessing seven or eight. My memory is weak, sorry.) Anyhow, I fell in love with it, despite the fact that I didn't understand the true meaning behind it. Then I heard "Leader of the Band" and that was a true inspiration. I later joined band at school and took up the flute, and ended up meeting a few other people who love Dan's music as much as I do. After hearing those, I decided to get a CD, and I got the Greatest Hits CD for my birthday. I also have my parent's "Innocent Age" record.

Dan, you are such an inspiration to myself and to others. Your music touches a spot in the heart. And you are more than a singer. You are a wonderful man (I've never met you, but I am sure that you are.), a wonderful musician, and a storyteller through your music. I can never thank you enough for the gift that you have given me, for without "Leader of the Band", and your music, I wouldn't have been so compelled to take up an instrument, something that has changed my life. You are outstanding, and I wish you many years of love and happiness. Thank you.

Kelsey

Dear Dan,

My thanks are less oriented in the heart than most, but I really appreciated "Phoenix" this past year for supporting that bit of attitude I needed as I left a soulless workplace and began to re-enter all the worlds I used to inhabit and the feelings I used to know (except for the "smartass" part of me -- that was always there no matter what).

I hope you're well and finding those flashes of pure joy that can come so suddenly and overwhelmingly.

Thanks again!

Marlys S.

Well Pete and Dan ( I hope you are reading this page ) I just came back from Clearwater Florida where I saw Dan in concert...he was excellent, totally mind blowing, I am always just taken away by his words and music, but last night it was more.....by the way I saw him in Melborne Florida on Thursday evening and he was excellent then too, but for some reason I enjoyed Clearwater more, it could have been the acoustics or the fact that I was the closest I have ever been to Dan before, we had excellent seats and I also had my binoculars aimed right on him most of the evening, I saw every smile and every little cute thing he did....he is a dream of a man...everywomans dream at the concert anyway....I wonder if Dan realizes the effect he has on women....I thought I was the only insane for Dan fan, but was listening to the people all around me and it was total love and admiration. I loved the selection of songs that he chose this tour, I have always loved "CROW and "THE LAST NAIL, but live ...well...it will never be the same for me again....I just pray he will make another video.... of this tour, everyone wants it, and we need another album with "Fire and Ice" and "The Nature of The Game" included, "great songs......and his version of "If I were a Carpenter" and "I need you", well...almost brought tears to my eyes, they were so beautifully done....My neice who is 11 told me tonight (she was with us) that she would just like to shake Dans hand and tell him he was "awesome"...she is a very smart young lady...and we are trying to introduce her to the best music, something that will shape her mind in a positive way and hopefully help her appreciate good music all her life...We started with Dan Fogelberg ....he is the best............So I am sad tonight that the show is over for me in Florida , but the music will go on forever.....in my heart and in all of Dans loyal Fans.....I hope Pete is enjoying the Sunrise show, wish I could be there too......maybe next time he comes to Florida, I can attend all shows......Love Dan forever.....great show
Dan................Carolyn...Winter Park, FL.
